It is a tough field. Don't be inclined to give up or be afraid to venture into the unknown. You have to be persistent. You need to have a good background in math and science skills with statistics and calculus. You also need good English skills to write reports, and communication skills to convey your information.
There will be numerous opportunities in this very competitive field. Environmental issues are continuously changing with air and water quality. The field is continuously changing
There is a lack of people of color in the field of forestry. In 26 years I've had the privilege of working with another person of color for 1 year. There are tremendous opportunities, but it is very difficult to recruit.
There is never a point where you run out of things to do; it's a continuous learning process and continuous growing process. I enjoy the variety of activities we engage in on a day to day basis. The people I run into in the public and private sector always provide something new and challenging to look forward to each day. There is always an opportunity to boldly go where no person has gone before
