New graduates often work in rural areas with small communities and social structures other than what they are used to.
You have to have a solid foundation in a discipline and a developed set of skills. You should take on leadership roles in high school clubs, projects, or in your church. You also need good communication and interpersonal skills. Go out to explore, talk to people in the field, take on activities, and get involved while in school.
When I moved into the field there were no barriers. I was not trapped or had to remain in the same discipline. You can make a living or find a career doing the kind of things you enjoy. I didn't want to sit in an office environment all the time. There's never a day that is the same, the world is always different for me.
